{Tutorial Tuesday} Re-Painting a Ceramic Plate

posted on: Monday, January 10, 2011

So I love inheriting furniture pieces and home decor. Okay, maybe I actually begged and pleaded for my sis to give me this piece.
This ceramic plate once sat in our old house (it was actually our college pad...it was dope)...Kambrie (sis) was all into red, mustard, and black. My house is neither red, mustard, or black....so the plate needed to be revamped in a major way. So when she finally gave in and gave it to me I already had a vision of what it would like and where it would go in my house.

Once I had cleaned and dried the plate I then applied enamel paint that I picked up from Johanns. I made sure to buy paint specific for ceramics. Once I had painted the plate I then baked it in the oven for 30 minutes.

Important little fact: don't be like me and open the oven door while the ceramic is baking...the acid from the paint will burn the hello goodness out of your eyes. Also, once the plate finishes baking, make sure you leave it in there to cool.

I then put the "new" piece in our living room. Purdy, huh?

Plate: Free
Paint: $6.00
Time: 2 hours
Look: Good as new.

  8. Great idea. I've painted blank ceramic before, but I'd never thought to repaint over an already existing pattern. It turned out nicely too!

  19. HI..have a question...is the painted plate food safe...can one serve cookies on it without the paint releasing nasty toxins...lol. I ask because I am searching like a crazy woman for food-safe paint for plates and bowls. I want to paint the inside so the paint has to be safe for food coming in contact with it. Many thanks and warmest regards, Karen Meer - MADAME Whimsey
