DIY Canvas Artwork

posted on: Wednesday, July 25, 2012

For those of you new to Spunky Junky I have an obsession with wall art. Whether it be a photo wall or a new canvas project I also seem to find someway to incorporate art in every room of our home. Some of my all-time favorite projects have included my silverware wall art, my dining room photo collage, and my infamous chevron shoebox hangings. A few months ago I also finished this fun chevron canvas for Brecken and Addy's room. This fun project took about a day from start to finish but I guarantee that it will bring the spunk to your home too!

Enjoy and thanks for stopping in!

Headband Tutorial

Tutorial?! Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Between feedings, diaper changes, and reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?" for the hundredth time I managed to sneak in a few minutes for my dear sewing machine and glue gun. Believe me when I say a little project making was good for my soul this week...

And I must say, having a little girl has been so much fun. Accessorizing a baby girl usually turns out to be the highlight of my day. This simple tutorial will take you less than ten minutes--because ya'll know how precious every minute is when you have kids.
Update. A few of you emailed me asking what dies I used to cut my flowers. My favorites here and here.  As for my leather scraps I get them from my Dad's saddle shop, but you can also find leather scraps at any craft store. If you want more variety visit a saddle shop in your area or hit up Tandy Leather Factory.

Our week through Instagram...

...and a big thanks for all of your suggestions on fixing my blog. Brecken had a good time deleting my entire.blog.template. I finally broke down and had Lauren from Blue Lux Studio fix it for me (she's a bonafide blog fixin' rock star)!

Brecken got a hold of my blog. Obviously, we have differing opinions of what it should look like. Anyone know how to change it back? I will pay you off in cookies and hugs--lots of hugs.

Please tell me I am not the only parent whose child has an aversion to the bathtub? As a newborn Brecken was a water baby who loved to play while being slathered in baby shampoo. As he got older and learned to float he would lay in the tub until he turned prune-like kicking his tiny feet back-and-forth. Then, he changed. Now it is gnashing teeth and deep-bellied screams to get him to bath.

Do your children have a favorite toy they enjoy playing with during bath time?

There are times when I find it difficult to write to you, as if the words don't do justice in describing how I feel. The gentle cooing of your voice to the grunting in your sleep are all simple attributes that you have developed that I hope will  never fade. Sometimes I lay next to you in bed and wonder what goes through your little mind. Do you still remember heaven, or has that faded with your time here are earth? Do you remember every time your brother has accidentally sat on your head? When you smile in your sleep is it because you are entrenched in a sweet dream?

I hope that whatever it may be,  that your thoughts are filled with precious memories of love--love from us to you and love for this wonderful life you've been given. My baby girl, you are special in so many ways. So special, in fact, that you have touched my life in way that I never could have imagined. Your sweet spirit makes me want to talk softer, listen more, and love often.

I love you, my dear.

Last week I packed up the kids and we headed north to spend a week at my parent's house. My best friend's sister was getting married and a surprise 50th birthday party for my Dad was brewing, so I felt that a few extra days at home would be a refreshing change. The Internet service is slow and the cell reception is spotty so going home has always been the perfect way to cleanse myself of technology.

My parent's home is a safe haven of sorts. My mom's food is always comforting and she always insists on feeding us way too much, my Dad is always filling us in on the latest news in town with his theatrical dialogue, and my room, well it hasn't changed much in ten years. The smells, the arrangement of furniture, and the clothes nestled in my closet take me back to a time when my biggest worries were getting to track practice on time and finishing my algebra homework before 8:30 a.m.

The love that I had growing up at home has now been funneled to Brecken. When not getting showered with kisses and hugs by Grandma and Grandpa he could usually be found running outside, riding horses with Grandpa, and when the heat finally became unbearable my Mom introduced him to the world of VHS. That little one then took full advantage of the opportunity to lay beneath the cool air conditioner and watch Disney Classics all afternoon.

I lost count how many times he watched Beauty and the Beast and Toy story. I was at my wits end, it was 95 degrees outside and at least 105 inside...

I've also conceded to my Mom. Brecken is completely in love with her. So much in fact that I have this inkling that she may very well be his favorite person in the entire world. She loves him unconditionally, talks to him a sweetest and most calming voice, feeds him continually, and she provides him with the best toys a boy could ever want. She has set the standards high...

And speaking of high standards, my best friends delivered the most beautiful Maid of Honor speech for her sister. One part particularly stood out to me.

"As you sit side-by-side through this roller coaster of life, remember to scream from the peaks, hold hands through the dips, laugh through the loops, and enjoy every twist and turn. For the ride is much better when you share it together.

Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is the progress, and working together is the success."

wow, right?!

Kudos, Martina. If teaching ever fails (which it won't) you will have a true knack for writing beautiful Hallmark cards.

Oh, heaven help me, I need sleep. Our family left town late last week and I thought that returning back to our normal schedule would be easy. Think again. Since then the wee one has found a knack for staying up all night. John's been sleeping like a champ. On the fourth he got a nasty sunburn so he's been popping Benedryll like it's going out of style.

And as for myself, I spend a large portion of the night feeding Addy and watching infomercials. How did I not tune into them earlier?  They know exactly how to get to sleep-deprived moms.  I find myself constantly say, "I NEED it! I WANT it! I have that exact problem! Have you seen the ad for perfect tortilla bowl?

I really wish I could write more right now, but I am trying to feed Addy, while simultaneously trying to type with the laptop on my lap. We're a beautiful mess I tell ya.

Fourth of July, you were good to us.

There was lots to be had...
an all-American parade
genuine wiener roast and hamburger BBQ
white trash slip n' slide
deep fat fried turkey (because didn't you know that turkey is supposed to be served every holiday)?
and an amazing firework show with a home made artillery shell launcher ta-boot.

Thank you Fourth. We'll see you again next year.
